Be Curious Not Judgmental
The Curiosity Club: Ditch the Judgemental Gavel, Grab Your Curiosity Compass
(Seriously, That’s a Thing… Maybe)
Ever feel like the world is a giant courtroom and you’re the judge, jury, and executioner for everyone’s quirks and choices? Yeah, us too.
Judging is easy – it’s like that comfy old armchair, familiar and oh-so-tempting. But here’s the thing: curiosity is the key to unlocking a world beyond snap judgments and preconceived notions.
Think about it: Have you ever met someone who seemed totally different from you, but then you actually talked to them and realized they were kind of awesome? That’s the magic of curiosity! It lets you see the world through a different lens, to understand where people are coming from instead of just slapping a label on them.

Critical or cynical?
Ready to ditch the gavel and embark on a journey of open-mindedness? Let’s grab our metaphorical backpacks and explore!
- The Counterintuitive Fact: Did you know that judging others actually makes you less happy? Studies show that focusing on other people’s flaws makes us feel worse about ourselves. Ouch! So, next time you find yourself judging someone, try asking yourself a “curious question” instead. What might be going on in their life? What experiences shaped them?
- My Recreational Judging Mishap: Remember that time I spent my entire vacation secretly criticizing everyone’s choice of leisure activities? “Beach bumming? How boring!” I thought to myself. “Surely there are more enriching ways to spend your time.” Turns out, the “beach bum” was a marine biologist studying coral reefs, and the “novel reader under the umbrella” was a bestselling author taking a well-deserved break. The point? Curiosity could have saved me from a vacation filled with negativity and opened the door to some truly interesting conversations (and maybe even a newfound appreciation for unwinding on the beach).
- Challenge: The next time you encounter someone who seems different, take a deep breath and choose curiosity over judgment. Strike up a conversation (if appropriate) and ask them about their hobbies or interests. You might be surprised at what you learn, and you might even make a new friend along the way.
These are just a few tips to get your curiosity compass spinning in the right direction. Stay tuned, fellow explorers, because in the next section, we’ll share practical tools to help you become a master of open-mindedness and unlock a world of fascinating connections!
In the meantime, a conversation recommendation for your local curiosity tribe: how do you challenge your own judgments? What’s one question you’re curious to ask someone who seems completely different from you?
Let’s share our journeys of open-mindedness and keep the fire of curiosity burning bright!
