Ever feel like the world is a giant courtroom and you’re the judge, jury, and executioner for everyone’s quirks and choices?\u00a0 Yeah, us too.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Judging is easy \u2013 it’s like that comfy old armchair, familiar and oh-so-tempting.\u00a0 But here’s the thing:\u00a0 curiosity is the key to unlocking a world beyond snap judgments and preconceived notions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about it: Have you ever met someone who seemed totally different from you, but then you actually talked to them and realized they were kind of awesome?  That’s the magic of curiosity!  It lets you see the world through a different lens, to understand where people are coming from instead of just slapping a label on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The Counterintuitive Fact: Did you know that judging others actually makes you less happy? Studies show that focusing on other people’s flaws makes us feel worse about ourselves. Ouch! So, next time you find yourself judging someone, try asking yourself a “curious question” instead. What might be going on in their life? What experiences shaped them?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. My Recreational Judging Mishap:\u00a0 Remember that time I spent my entire vacation secretly criticizing everyone’s choice of leisure activities?\u00a0 “Beach bumming? How boring!” I thought to myself.\u00a0 “Surely there are more enriching ways to spend your time.” Turns out, the “beach bum” was a marine biologist studying coral reefs, and the “novel reader under the umbrella” was a bestselling author taking a well-deserved break.\u00a0 The point?\u00a0 Curiosity could have saved me from a vacation filled with negativity and opened the door to some truly interesting conversations (and maybe even a newfound appreciation for unwinding on the beach).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Challenge:\u00a0 The next time you encounter someone who seems different, take a deep breath and choose curiosity over judgment.\u00a0 Strike up a conversation (if appropriate) and ask them about their hobbies or interests.\u00a0 You might be surprised at what you learn, and you might even make a new friend along the way.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
